How to Tie a Christensen Knot

Christensen Knot Tying Steps

  1. Begin with the wide end on the right.
  2. Bring the wide end over the narrow end to the left.
  3. Take the wide end around behind the narrow end horizontally from left to right.
  4. Take the wide end up in front of the neck loop.
  5. Pull the wide end down behind the neck loop, emerging on the left side of the narrow end.
  6. Take the wide end in front across the horizontal and diagonal bands created in the previous step. Hold a finger under this new crossing.
  7. Take the wide end around behind the knot from left to right. Bring the wide end across the front, on top of the horizontal fold you made in the previous step. Keep both bands off the collar with a finger.
  8. Take the wide end up behind the neck loop.
  9. Tuck the wide end down behind both of the horizontal bands and pull through.
  10. Pull the knot into place by holding it with one hand and gently pulling on the narrow end. Use your finger to carefully pull out the diagonal folds until the shape is clear.

About the Christensen Knot

The Christensen Knot has an hourglass shape and requires a smooth tie – leave your knitted tie in the closet.

This knot first appeared in a Swedish mail order catalogue in 1917. It was later republished and named the Christensen or cross knot.
